Sevvai Dosham — also called Chevvai Dosham, and known elsewhere as Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosham — is one of the most asked-about factors in Tamil marriage matching. Here is what it means and how families traditionally weigh it.

What is Sevvai Dosham?

In traditional Tamil astrology, Sevvai is the planet Mars (செவ்வாய் / அங்காரகன்). A horoscope is said to carry Sevvai Dosham when Mars sits in certain houses of the birth chart. Mars is associated with energy, temper and assertiveness, so tradition holds that its placement can affect harmony in married life if the two charts are not matched for it.

Which positions cause it

Sevvai Dosham is traditionally counted when Mars occupies one of these houses, usually reckoned from the Lagna (ascendant), and often also checked from the Moon and from Venus:

• 2nd house — family and speech
• 4th house — home and comfort
• 7th house — marriage and partnership
• 8th house — longevity and the marital bond
• 12th house — losses and the bedroom
• 1st house (Lagna) — self and temperament (counted in many traditions)

Because different schools count the 1st house and the reference point differently, two astrologers can reach slightly different conclusions. This is exactly why a consistent, transparent calculation helps.

How it is traditionally considered cancelled

Tradition also describes many ways Sevvai Dosham is reduced or considered cancelled (parihara). Commonly cited ones include:

• When both partners have Sevvai Dosham, it is widely held to cancel out.
• When Mars is in its own sign or exalted (for example in Mesha, Viruchigam or Makaram positions per the rule used).
• Certain placements of Jupiter or the Moon, or the influence of benefic planets on the relevant houses.
